2006 St. Petersburg, Russia

The first ever G8 Youth Summit was held between March 4 and March 9, 2006 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies took place at Mariininsky Palace, a building of Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg. At the opening ceremony, delegates were greeted by Russian politicians and representatives of the General Consulates of the G8 countries. The Summit was organized by the International Youth Diplomacy League with the generous assistance of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg, and St. Petersburg University.

The final communiqué for the 2006 Summit was presented to Oleg Morosov, the Vice-Speaker of the Russian Parliament who discussed it with the Summit’s participants in their final session. The topics covered by the 2006 Summit were as follows:

    • Reformation of the UN
    • Dialogue between developed and developing countries and the challenges of poverty.

    • The influence of this process on conflict settlement in the region
  • Ministers of Defense
    • Conventional Weapons and Non-Proliferation
    • Nuclear Weapon-Free zone in Southeast Asia.

    • Oil, gas and coal
    • Nuclear power
    • Alternative Energy and Fair Distribution.
  • Ministers of Finance
    • Promotion of economic growth in Africa
    • Support of water supply, healthcare and education
    • Fostering development aid.
  • Ministers of Internal Affairs
    • Drug trafficking – and the threat it poses to international safety
    • Boundary control
    • Destruction of the centers of manufacture by the spread of drug addiction.
